Look Back:John Galliano’s Very First Collection For Dior

He presented his first couture collection for the storied brand on January 20, 1997, to widespread acclaim and best hopes a prosperous future there.Galliano’s dresses and suits were creative and playful and — dare we say it — fun. After a lifetime of designer Gianfranco Ferre’s suits and white shirts, Galliano’s full skirted gowns and body conscious suits and electric colors were inspired. His references to everything from African tribes to baroque scroll work to Native American beading (and even chinoiserie) were refreshingly inventive. Nicole Kidman would wear the famous chartreuse dress from this collection on the red carpet at the Oscars just a few weeks later."
